Discover Drama: A 3-Day Holiday Program for Kids (Ages 6-10)
Program Overview: "Discover Drama" is a fun, interactive, and educational holiday program designed to help children develop their imagination, confidence, and communication skills through drama and creative expression. Over the course of three exciting days, students will engage in a variety of activities that encourage self-expression, teamwork, and problem-solving, all while exploring the world of drama and theatre.
Each day will include a mix of games, exercises, storytelling, and mini-performances that focus on key skills such as collaboration, body language, vocal expression, and improvisation. By the end of the program, participants will have learned how to communicate more effectively, think on their feet, and become more confident individuals—while having a blast!
Day 1: "Let's Act It Out!" – Building Confidence through Play
Focus Areas:
-
Self-Expression
-
Teamwork
-
Basic Drama Skills
First Session:
-
Welcome & Icebreaker Games (10 min): Fun name games and introductions to help children feel comfortable with each other.
-
The Power of Imagination (20 min): A storytelling exercise where kids are encouraged to use their imagination to create characters and scenarios. They will act out simple emotions (happy, sad, angry, excited) and different animal movements (e.g., "show me how an elephant walks").
-
Freeze & Freeze Tag (30 min): In this active, fun drama game, one child "freezes" in a pose, and others must guess what they are acting out. The twist? The "frozen" child can jump to life and start a new pose when another player gets close.
Second Session:
-
Character Creation (60 min): Children will create their own characters using costumes or props. They will then act out short scenes with their new characters. Encouraging individuality and allowing children to explore different personalities.
-
Team Drama Game: "Group Story" (20min): In groups, children will work together to create a story. One child starts with a sentence, and the next child adds another, continuing the narrative. This fosters creativity and collaboration.
Wrap-Up & Reflection (10 min):
-
Kids will sit in a circle and share what they enjoyed most about the day and what new things they learned.
Day 2: "Express Yourself!" – Using Body & Voice to Tell a Story
Focus Areas:
-
Vocal Expression
-
Body Language
-
Improvisation
First Session:
-
Vocal Warm-Ups (15 min): Fun voice exercises (like animal sounds, tongue twisters, and singing) to warm up the vocal cords and encourage kids to use their voices confidently.
-
Physical Storytelling (15 min): Children will act out short stories using only their bodies. No words allowed! This exercise helps children understand non-verbal communication and how emotions can be conveyed through body language.
-
Mirroring (30 min): In pairs, children will mirror each other’s movements. This builds awareness of body control and enhances empathy and coordination.
Second Session:
-
Improvisation Games (15 min): Games like "Yes, And..." (where children build on each other's ideas) and "What Are You Doing?" (where one child starts an action, and the other asks “What are you doing?” and must answer with a different action) are fun ways to practice quick thinking and spontaneous creativity.
-
Scene Work (60 min): Groups of children will be given simple scenarios (e.g., "You are in a candy store, and something magical happens") and will improvise short scenes based on the prompt. This helps with creativity, collaboration, and thinking on the spot.
Wrap-Up & Reflection (15 min):
-
Children will reflect on what it felt like to use their voices and bodies to tell stories, and share which improv game they enjoyed the most.
Day 3: "Let’s Perform!" – Bringing It All Together
Focus Areas:
-
Confidence in Performance
-
Collaboration
-
Final Showcase
First Session:
-
Warm-Up & Review (10 min): A fun warm-up that revisits the skills learned over the past two days—vocal, physical, and improvisation exercises.
-
Scene Rehearsal (50 min): In small groups, children will rehearse the scenes they worked on the previous day, using their acting, voice, and body skills to refine their performances.
Second Session:
-
Final Performance Preparation (60 min): Children will practice their mini-performances in front of the group, with coaching and feedback from the instructors to help them feel ready for the big showcase.
-
Performance (10 min): The day ends with a mini showcase where kids perform in front of their peers, showcasing everything they’ve learned. Parents are invited to watch the final performance!
Wrap-Up & Graduation (20 min):
-
After the performance, children will receive certificates of participation, and a celebration with snacks and certificates will be held.
-
Each child will also have the opportunity to share what they’ve learned and how they feel about their experience.
Key Outcomes & Benefits:
-
Improved Communication Skills: Through vocal and physical exercises, children will learn how to express themselves more clearly and confidently.
-
Teamwork & Collaboration: Working in groups, kids will develop essential teamwork and problem-solving skills.
-
Creative Thinking: Drama fosters imagination and helps kids think creatively, boosting their ability to adapt and innovate.
-
